Convincing kids that braces are cool can be a challenge. While true, a few of their classmates are likely sporting a mouthful of metal too, they may still need an occasional reminder that having orthodontic gear is nothing to be embarrassed about. If you’re looking for ways to help show your child that you can still be awesome while your teeth are being aligned, here are a few pop culture examples of characters who prove that wearing braces might not be so bad after all!
Murray (Clueless)
While yes, Clueless is from the 1900s (gasp!) its still a very relatable teen movie, and one of its main characters, Murray, also happens to have a full set of shiny, metal braces. Murray’s fun-loving personality, trendy (well, for the 90s) attire, and carefree attitude make him one of the most underrated characters in the film. His presence shows teens (especially young men) that you can be cool and wear braces, too!
Sharon Spitz (Braceface)
This cartoon series centered around a young girl with magnetically charged braces that gave her some pretty cool abilities. While your child’s braces won’t do any special tricks, they will eventually give them a beautiful smile, which is actually kind of a superpower in itself.
Lisa Simpson (The Simpsons)
When loveable genius Lisa Simpson needs a set of braces, the Simpson family is dealt some bad news: their dental insurance coverage is about to be taken away by patriarch Homer’s employer. To prevent this, Homer forms a union to fight for the benefits of him and his fellow power plant workers.
Darla Sherman (Finding Nemo)
Little kids will likely remember Darla Sherman, the niece of the dentist who ‘catches’ Nemo while scuba diving. Darla shows up at her uncle’s office decked out in braces and headgear and gets a little too up-close-and-personal with her uncle’s fishtank.
Mike Wazowski (Monster’s University)
Mike Wazowski is the adorable green cyclops monster that is prone to panic in the Monster’s Inc. movies. In this prequel, the character is seen wearing a retainer to maintain his orthodontic results, reminding kids that keeping up with their aftercare is just as important as the treatment itself!
Remember, most kids just want to fit in with their peers. Wearing braces can make them feel different than their friends and who they see represented in the media. Having a few fun, positive examples to share with them can make them feel seen and not so alone in their orthodontic journey, which in turn can make wearing braces a lot more fun!
