5 Factors That Affect the Cost of Your Orthodontic Treatment

There is no one-size-fits-all in dentistry, and that includes orthodontic treatment. That means the cost of braces can vary. If you are considering getting braces, one of the top questions on your list is probably how much they will cost you. It will depend on many things, but the following five factors will have the biggest impact on the final price.

#1: The Complexity of Your Case

It won’t be surprising that one of the biggest factors influencing the cost of your orthodontic treatment is how complex your case is. If you have had braces in the past and are just looking to regain your perfectly aligned teeth, your treatment is going to be much quicker than a teen with severely misaligned teeth getting braces for the first time. The longer your treatment, the more visits and care you’ll need, which means the price will be higher.

#2: What Type of Orthodontics You’re Getting

You have two main options when it comes to orthodontics: traditional metal braces or Invisalign, which involves wearing clear trays that are customized to gradually shift your teeth over the course of several months or a couple of years. The latter is a popular choice for adults, but it does tend to cost more than metal braces. Most people decide Invisalign is worth the price because the trays are more comfortable and don’t stick out like traditional braces.

#3: How Well You Follow the Treatment Plan

One of the most sure-fire ways to add to the cost of your treatment is by not following your orthodontist’s recommendations. If you eat hard, sticky candy that makes your brackets pop off, you’ll have to make extra appointments to get them reapplied. The same goes for ignoring Invisalign instructions. And with both orthodontic options, practicing excellent oral hygiene is key because it will keep you from having to delay treatment to have cavities, gum disease, or other oral health issues treated.

If you’re not typically one to follow the rules, you may be looking at a higher price for orthodontic treatment.

#4: Where You’re Located

One other significant factor influencing the cost of your orthodontic treatment is quite simple – and it comes down to geography. The cost of living in your area will influence the price you will pay to have your teeth straightened. Folks in higher price areas can generally expect to fork over a bit more for their orthodontic treatment.

#5: Dental Insurance

Braces are sometimes partially covered by dental insurance, but usually only for patients 18 and under. Many insurance plans will cover some portion of metal braces but usually won’t include Invisalign. Regardless of whether or not you receive insurance coverage, most dental practices offer payment plans for your convenience.

To conclude, there are a number of things that can influence the cost of your orthodontic treatment, but it’s important to remember that dentists want to make your care affordable. Don’t let cost be a barrier to pursuing straight teeth and a beautiful smile.
